Association of Institutes Of Consecrated and Apostolic Life (ASSICAL) Morogoro DIRECTORY 2008
Institutes and Societies
Precious
stones in the golden crown that Christ has given to his Bridegroom.
Alternatively, a bouquet of flowers of all colours: these are only two
similitudes for the multitude of institutes of the Catholic Church. The diocese
of Morogoro is between those that rejoice more for this big grace.
If
we go back to the nineteen-century, we see that the founders of the Church in
our country were Holy Ghost Fathers who started the evangelisation in Zanzibar
and Bagamoyo, followed a while by sisters (Filles de Marie) from the island of
Reunion. Then, from the very beginning, religious were in the front not only of
the spiritual life, but also of the missionary work.
Every
start is difficult: for many years, these two congregations evangelised, doing a
heavy day’s work in all the heat, until other religious persons, especially
indigenous who were the fruit of their work, arrived to help them at different
times.
Many
sisters of the whole country know well this diocese because they studied at
Bigwa, in the secondary school founded for them by the Tanzania Catholic
Association of Sisters, the same that now is completing the construction of a
new holistic centre for intercongregational formation, which is near to it.
A
new stage in the presence of religious institutes and apostolic life societies
in the diocese started when the Salvatorians, after reaching an accord with many
of them, chose Morogoro to build a religious major seminary. By now, it is the
Salvatorian Institute of Philosophy and Theology. Someone plain to transform it
in a University with different faculties. The late Bishop Adrian Mkoba opened
the door of the diocese to receive any order or congregation, which may need
that its members come to study there. From then on, the works of building and
formation are not stopped in the area of Kola Hill, near the Dar es Salaam road.
Anyone who pass there does see himself this progress and talk about this little
Vatican City at the foot of the Uluguru Mountains.
This
institute’s attraction is the principal reason for the mass immigration of
congregations to Morogoro in the last years; but if you begin to travel for
Dodoma you will meet many of them in the area of Kihonda, notwithstanding their
buildings are more inserted in the people’s houses.
In
the complex by now, the diocese has more than 30 different institutes of men and
women, clerical and laical, of consecrated and apostolic life, of pontifical and
diocesan right. Yet it has no monastery of contemplative life, notwithstanding
Bishop Telesphore Mkude desires it very much.
His
Grace in rejoicing for this dramatic growth, at the beginning of the Great
Jubilee of the year 2000, has chosen for the first time an Episcopal Vicar for
the Consecrated Life. At the same time he has founded ASSICAL (Association of
Institutes of Consecrated and Apostolic Life – Morogoro Diocese) in order that
they may know one another and share thoughts, experience, hopes and projects,
especially about formation and apostolate.
From
then on, this work is in progress through meetings and the communal celebration
of the Day of the Consecrated Life started by Pope John Paul II (February 2nd
of every year). Truly, it is a joy to see hundreds of religious from about any
continent that rejoice together in their different vocations for the Kingdom of
the heaven. However, one day does not form a year. There are other 364 days,
which offer to everyone the possibility of thank God by deeds for his charisma.
Fidelity of any moment probes that we receive his graces with fruit instead of
waste it. On the contrary, the celebration has not sense. This challenge is
before everyone of us and before every community, because by its nature the
religious life pursues the holiness together, not individualistically.
After
the holiness, religious institutes pursue the offering of a positive contribute
to the Church and the society, everyone according to its charisma.
Notwithstanding many efforts of these that immigrate in diocese with the scope
of formation do end in this fundamental work, we can say that they intend to do
something also out of their houses. In the measure that the collaboration
progresses, the paths are seen, because if there is the intention, there is also
the path.
As
usual, the needs of the dioceses are many. Then, many priests and laypersons do
hope to profit from the presence of many fellow faithful that have dedicated
themselves to consecrated and apostolic life. Some institutes have houses that
are not for formation, and they do respond more to those needs. In a special way
the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Morogoro, who are the most
numerous, do offer their services in parishes, schools and hospitals everywhere
in the diocese.
May
God concede all of us to do humbly the part, which he has planned for us to help
the people to reach the everlasting life.
