Geographical Situation

-        The Catholic Diocese of Morogoro covers an area of 43,380 square Kilometers in the South Eastern part of the Republic of Tanzania. It comprises five government districts of Morogoro Urban, Morogoro Rural, Kilosa, Mvomero, and Bagamoyo. Bagamoyo district is part of Coast Region whereas the other four districts are located in Morogoro Region.

-   The government headquarters of   Morogoro Region are found in the Municipality of Morogoro. The Municipality hosts also the headquarters of the Diocese, the Cathedral Church, and Bishop’s Residence.

Population of the Diocese

-         The Population of the Catholic Diocese of Morogoro is 1,559,271. The Catholics are 638,591 in number.

-         Only about 20% of the population lives in towns, whereas the majority of the population, that is about 80%, live in the villages.

-         The native ethnic groups of Morogoro are Waluguru, Wanguu, Wakutu, Wazigua, Wakami, Wakaguru, Wavidunda, Wasagara, Wakwere, Wakwavi, Wazaramo na Wadoe.

-  Besides these native ethnic groups, small groups of immigrants are also  found in the Diocese. These are mainly Wazigua, Wachaga,Wamasai, Wangoni and Wagogo.  

-  Each ethnic group has its own vernacular. However, Kiswahili is the main language spoken all over the Diocese.
